Sugar
Other ITOCHU Group companies are responsible for the import and processing of raw sugar and IFSM is responsible for selling sugar in Japan.
We sell to manufacturers of beverages, confectionary, baked goods, and dairy products. In response to increased health awareness recently, we aim to handle not only sugar but also a comprehensive range of sweeteners, including independently importing saccharified products and sweetened preparations.

Beverage Ingredients
We sell domestically produced items handled by Japanese ingredient manufacturers and tealeaves and roasted grains produced overseas and independently imported from around the world, especially Asia, to manufacturers of beverages and food products.
We provide added value by supporting taste development through the creation of taste analysis data for the individual products of each manufacturer.
An ingredient which we started importing directly from Italy recently is orzo made from roasted barley. It is attracting attention as a beverage with wide appeal because it imparts a coffee-like flavor but is caffeine free.

Besides selling ingredients, we also manage bakeries under contract, taking charge of the entire process from receipt of raw materials and inventory management to shipment to production lines, thereby reducing the burden on customers while achieving strict inventory control.
We also leverage the advantage of handling a wide range of ingredients to provide services such developing and proposing recipes and products and conducting market research to meet customer requirements.

Soybean and Sesame Seeds
We began selling these ingredients in FY2016.
We import soybeans for food products such as soy sauce, miso, tofu, natto and deep-fried tofu, which are essential for Japanese dishes, and sell them to Japanese manufacturers.
For sesame seeds, the ITOCHU Group has a market share of around 50%, in other words, we sell one in every two sesame seeds sold.
Starch
We import starch from North America, Europe, Australia, Asia and other parts of the world and sell it to manufacturers of starch, modified starch, food products and other products in Japan.
Starch is used in a wide variety of foods. For example, when cooking tempura udon, starch is used to increase the crispiness of the tempura, and to enhance the texture of the noodles.

Rice

We purchase rice, which is essential for Japanese dishes, from rice producers all over Japan and sell it to rice mills, steamed rice manufacturers, dairy manufacturers, restaurant chains, food product manufacturers, wholesalers and other customers.

Although the Japanese rice industry is very big with an estimated size of around 3 trillion yen, even the market leader has an annual turnover of just under 200 billion yen and a market share of less than 10% and still has plenty of opportunity to increase its market share. For that reason, it is an attractive market with huge potential.

We are currently one of the market leaders with the fourth largest market share (the largest share among trading companies).
Besides selling the rice that is used in the bento boxes, rice balls and sushi of a leading convenience store, we also provide quality control and process management support at rice mills and cooked rice manufacturing plants, enabling us to provide rice with the same delicious taste wherever the convenience store’s bento boxes or onigiri are eaten in Japan.
